Cal Look Citroen ZX - "ZX Slammer"

I thought it was about time I showed off some of my handy work...

I had fun doing this on a cheap car.. Doors handles removed n smoothed, roof chopped and lowered (hard work and cost a fortune), lowered (inner wheel arches modified) and air suspension. Filler cap weld up and smoother .. filler cap is behind hinged rear tail light. Rises to normal hight. To get in to the car you have to get in via the remote opening drivers door! Porsche 911 alloys made to fit ... well the ZX was made to fit the alloys! This is my old old car ! The buyer was from France (I'm in the UK).

That's the best vanity plate/car combo i've seen so far. The car is a Czech (i think it wasn't too much of Volkswagen yet in Skoda products at that time) Skoda Felicia, an economy and cheap car, which is worth perhaps less than thousand dollars now. Perhaps the fact that he put light alloy wheels on it has something to do...

You can't get free text vanity plates in Poland, the text always has to be preceded by the two letter area code (W0 is for Warsaw, for instance).

A few of my favourite things... - 131/365

A few of my favourite things... - 131/365

A collection of some of my favourite things that I end up using almost everyday.

Robo-Cons - I love trainers, I love trainer culture but unfortunately my feet kill sneakers. I go through shoes and trainers like you wouldn't believe. The average life for footware is 6 months after that I tend to wear a hole in the sole of the shoe, just under the ball of my foot. So I can't justify spending over ?100 on the latest Nikes. Day-to-day I wear Doc Martens, they seem to hold up pretty well, I've given up on shoes, boots are the way forwards. I also have a pair of nice Timberland boots donated to me by That Old Serpent that are bearing up nicely. But these Cons (or Chuck Taylors or Convers All-Stars if you like) just keep on ticking. Granted, they go away for the winter and the stiching round the heel has gone, but they seem to keep on trucking. I love these, Ange bought them for me to replace a pair I had with hot rod flames on them. In fact, go back far enough in my photo stream* and you should see them brand new.

High Score 100 - He's a smart little Autobot who was a gift from Adam and Sarah (aka Revlimit and Driving in Heels). He turns into a game-pad and goes everywhere with me. He's my default, stand in toy. If I need a toy photo, he's my guy. Plus he's great for mucking about with on long train rides and robust enough for the kids to play with.

Gen 2 iPod - Funny how dated it looks now isn't it? We have 4 iPods in the house, this one (which is mine), one of the first video iPods, a Touch with a broken screen and a Shuffle, which is Lettys. I love mine, it's a bit beaten up and battle damaged but it seems to have most of the music I really like on it. I bought it just before Letty was born, six years ago. Four buttons at the top, wheel in the middle and a LCD screen. Design classic.

Crappy old cut-offs - As is. Comfy and cooling. Went to India with me, as did the Cons actually.

Sennheiser PX200 Collapsable Head Phones - Again, a gift from Ange and again, bought before the Letster came along. Great sound, durable and still going strong. They fold down and fit into a case the exact same shape as the sort of case you get for a pair of glasses, which I have, of course, long since lost.

Rucksack - I must of bought this bag almost 12 years ago. It's been to America twice and over to Europe a few times too and is still going strong. I found it in a cupboard recently and decided to bring it back into service. You can get enough stuff in it for a week away if you pack light and the front has a great pocket for putting your comics in.

75th Anniversary of DC Comics Badge - Our American cousins call these buttons, we call 'em badges. Got this one free with an action figure, thought I should pop it on the bag. Plus, y'know, huge geek.

*You may have to wait till I go pro again I'm afraid!

How Wheel Alignment Works

how wheel alignment works

    wheel alignment
  • The adjustment of various components to meet predetermined specifications for camber, caster, toe and ride height.

  • Wheel alignment is part of standard automobile maintenance that consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are set to the car maker's specification.

  • Aligning a vehicle's wheels, by checking and, if necessary, resetting front and/or rear suspension and steering angles to the manufacturer's specifications. Uneven tire wear or steering that pulls can indicate a need to have the wheel alignment checked or adjusted.

JET 708100 JWTS-10 10-Inch WorkShop Table Saw

JET 708100 JWTS-10 10-Inch WorkShop Table Saw

This JET Tablesaw features a powerful 1-1/2HP motor with a poly-V drive belt transfer system to more efficiently power the saw blade. With a unique trunnion design, the motor is completely within the tablesaw cabinet rather than hanging out the backside like on competitive units. The steel extension tables give you a much larger working surface to help support the project while the double locking fence and deluxe miter gauge allow for precision cuts on any project. The unit has a left tilting blade for more controlled bevel cutting and offers a maximum 3-1/8" depth of cut at 90 degrees.

This is an excellent tool for jobsite use. It’s accurate enough to build cabinets and doors on site, and it's a trim carpenter’s dream to have on hand. With accuracy and a wide 30-inch fence, it beats the pants off a portable table saw. This saw comes with a high precision fence and a powerful motor for the toughest sawing operations. The motor is enclosed to prevent damage from the usual jobsite hazards. This contractor saw is another high-quality tool from Jet. It is accurate enough to be used for the small garage wood shop, where space is of the essence. -- Gabriel Shantara Ford

Hand forged Gränsfors Bruks British Trade Axe

Hand forged Gränsfors Bruks British Trade Axe

Gransfors Bruks is a small Swedish familiy operated company formed in 1902. Ever since it was founded the company has been making axes and crowbars of the finest quality. The smiths at Gransfors Bruk are famous for their skill.

Gransfors Bruks AB is located on the country-side between Gnarp and Bergsjo in Nordantsig County in northern Sweden - 10 kilometers west of the E4, 20 kilometers from the Gulf of Bothnia, between Hudiksvall and Sundsvall, 340 kilometers north of Stockholm.

HALSINGLAND IS BEAUTIFUL. That is something one notices when visiting Gransfors Bruks. Along the winding road between Gnarp and Bergsjo you can see green valleys, lakes and blue mountains. There are red houses and barns scattered among the meadows with grazing horses and sheep. Then a sign catches one’s eyes: Gransfors Bruks. Turning off, nestled between wooden houses and apple trees, there it is, by a turbulent stream. The building is somewhat bigger than the surrounding cottages and one can see how it has been enlarged throughout the years. Entering the wooden door in the older part of the house, you pass by the warehouse, lunchroom and old-fashioned office and get down to the forge in the somewhat newer annex. There, big flywheels are moving and a rhythmical throbbing is heard from the forging operation.

Next to the forging hammers, in ovens that are hotter than 1,200°C, steel bars are heated. When the right temperature is reached, which the smith can see on the red-yellowish color of the steel, a glowing piece is cut off and the treatment in the forging hammers begins. The smith cleverly handles the hot steel, and slowly the square piece is transformed into an axe head. The smith finishes his work by branding in the Gransfors Bruks’ “label and crown” and his own initials, scrutinizing the axe head and hanging it up to cool.

Sharpening, tempering, annealling, the handle and control : the room next to the forge is the sharpening room. Here the right edge bevel is established by grinding (beveling) and, after the tempering and annealling operation, the beveled edge is ground with a finer stone, honed and polished. After the forging and the first step of sharpening the edge, the lower part of the axe head, the blade, is tempered by warming it to 820°C followed by a quick cooling in cold running water. Then the axe head is annealed: kept for 60 minutes in an oven that is 195°C. This relieves the stress in the steel, built up by the forging and tempering processes and gives the bit the desired hardness and toughness. The hardness of the bit is measured, 57 Rockwell C, and enery single head is tested by a smith who, with a big hammer, strikes on the edge’s corners. If the blade does not break the head is good.

After the final sharpening and the “stropping” of the edge (stropped on a rotating buffing wheel) it is time to put a handle on the axe head. With the help of a hydraulic press the handle is squeezed into the axe head together with a wooden wedge. The right angle in relation to the axe head, the alignment and the hang, are tested. The last step is to drive a three legged steel wedge into the wooden wedge. Finally the axe is carefully checked, the axe head is rubbed with a water repellant and rust preventive oil and the axe is given a leather sheath. Not to be forgotten, The Axe Book is tied to the axe.

LASER BOARD

LASER BOARD

This board is placed a right angles to the MT and at 104.5" in front of each hub of the MT and fire the laser. = = = you can see it in the right had lower corner. Mark it and do the same to the left front.

Move the board aft at 104.5" from each hub and fire away. Mark it and measure the difference, which comes out to 1.5" Toe-In at 104.5". What does it mean ? ? ? ? I at least have Toe-In :>). Really I don't know yet. I have to get one of the engineers from work to figure what the Toe-In is. They say 1/8" - 1/4" Toe-In is good. Well where do you take this measurement ? ? In the "old days" it was taken at the leading edge of the tire. Today ? ? Move the board to the front of the tires and your 1.5" will be MUCH less. The question is by how much ? ?

Way the 104.5" you ask ? ? Well, the back of the body is 102 or so inches away.

You might also ask why I don't take the MT to a front end specialist ? ? ? Well, if it can't drive onto the alignment platform they can't do a F------G thing. The platform doesn't have a ramp for a tire in the middle, only if it has 4 wheels can they do it. So far I can't find any old timers= I'm still looking.

Also, I'm shocked at how little these people really know about front end geometry. The computer tells them what's right or wrong, don't need to know nothin. OOPS, I'm wrong about that, they do need to know what button to push. CAN YOU TELL I'M A BIT FRUSTRATED ! !

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work

Just as Masters and Johnson were pioneers in the study of human sexuality, so Dr. John Gottman has revolutionized the study of marriage. As a professor of psychology at the University of Washington and the founder and director of the Seattle Marital and Family Institute, he has studied the habits of married couples in unprecedented detail over the course of many years. His findings, and his heavily attended workshops, have already turned around thousands of faltering marriages.

This book is the culmination of his life's work: the seven principles that guide couples on the path toward a harmonious and long-lasting relationship. Straightforward in their approach, yet profound in their effect, these principles teach partners new and startling strategies for making their marriage work. Gottman helps couples focus on each other, on paying attention to the small day-to-day moments that, strung together, make up the heart and soul of any relationship. Being thoughtful about ordinary matters provides spouses with a solid foundation for resolving conflict when it does occur and finding strategies for living with those issues that cannot be resolved.

Packed with questionnaires and exercises whose effectiveness has been proven in Dr. Gottman's workshops, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work is the definitive guide for anyone who wants their relationship to attain its highest potential.

The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work is the result of Dr. John Gottman's many years of closely observing thousands of marriages. This kind of longitudinal research has never been done before. Based on his findings, he has culled seven principles essential to the success of any marriage.
Maintain a love map.
Foster fondness and admiration.
Turn toward instead of away.
Accept influence.
Solve solvable conflicts.
Cope with conflicts you can't resolve.
Create shared meaning.

Dr. Gottman's unique questionnaires and exercises will guide couples on the road to revitalizing their marriage, or making a strong one even better.

According to most relationship books, the key to a solid marriage is communication, communication, communication. Phooey, says John Gottman, Ph.D., author of the much-lauded Why Marriages Succeed or Fail. There's much more to a solid, "emotionally intelligent" marriage than sharing every feeling and thought, he points out--though most couples therapists ineffectively (and expensively) harp on these concepts.
Gottman, the director of the Gottman Institute, has found through studying hundreds of couples in his "love lab" that it only takes five minutes for him to predict--with 91 percent accuracy--which couples will eventually divorce. He shares the four not-so-obvious signs of a troubled relationship that he looks for, using sometimes amusing passages from his sessions with married couples. (One standout is Rory, the pediatrician who didn't know the name of the family dog because he spent so much time at work.)
Gottman debunks many myths about divorce (primary among them that affairs are at the root of most splits). He also reveals surprising facts about couples who stay together. They do engage in screaming matches. And they certainly don't resolve every problem. "Take Allan and Betty," he writes. "When Allan gets annoyed at Betty, he turns on ESPN. When Betty is upset with him, she heads for the mall. Then they regroup and go on as if nothing's happened. Never in forty-five years of marriage have they sat down to have a 'dialogue' about their relationship." While this may sound like a couple in trouble, Gottman found that they pass the love-lab tests and say honestly that "they are both very satisfied with their relationship and they love each other deeply."
Through a series of in-depth quizzes, checklists, and exercises, similar to the ones he uses in his workshops, Gottman provides the framework for coping with differences and strengthening your marriage. His profiles of troubled couples rescued from the brink of divorce (including that of Rory, the out-of-touch doctor) and those of still-happy couples who reinvigorate their relationships are equally enlightening. --Erica Jorgensen

Orange Race August 1975

Gregg Hoover taking the sprint. This was my first Orange Race, as I had just moved back to Columbus from Schenectady. I can't find the missing Aug (?) 1975 Pedal Pushers Chronicle, so I can't identify the 2nd placed rider. I am battling for 3rd with a very bushy Dan Chafetz, and I see Dave Bonnell behind Chafetz. Gregg used to race with my older brother Greg in the early 60's, so he definitely deserved the name "Ancient One" here.
I don't remember who got 3rd!
For those who don't know, I should say that Orange races were approx 25 miles 4 lap club races in rural Delaware County Ohio (the place you see here has been obliterated by development for decades now) usually on Thursday nights.
